La fête nationale commémore la création de la Fédération des Emirats Arabes Unis le 2 Décembre 1971, date à laquelle les 6 Emirats, jusque là colonies britanniques ont acquis leur indépendance.
L’Emirat de Ras el Khaïma a rejoint la fédération au début de l’année suivante.

Cette fête nationale s’accompagne chaque année de festivités, d’animations culturelles, sportives et commerciales.

Le Marathon de Dubaï connu sous le nom de « Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon » se déroule chaque année depuis 2000.

Earth Hour est organisée chaque année le dernier samedi du mois de Mars à l’initiative du « World Wide Fun For Nature » (WWF) et du « Sydney Morning Herald », un grand quotidien australien.
Elle consiste à couper les lumières et débrancher les appareils électriques non essentielles pour une durée d’une heure afin de promouvoir l’économie d’électricité et, par conséquent, la réduction des émissions de gaz à effet de serre et la lute contre le réchauffement climatique.
